So while I worked at Build a Bear, I once had a group of guests come in at an hour and a half before closing (around 830 PM) who wanted all their bears stuffed extra firm. And I’m mean rock fucking solid. All 20 of their bears. We informed them that if they wanted them that full that it would put stress on the seams and that it might cause tearing. The guest insisted that we stuff them extra full anyway. The bears normally take about 45 seconds for regular stuffed bears, and for extra full bears TYPICALLY only about an extra 20 seconds or so of stuffing. They wanted them stuffed SO full, so precisely that each bear took 5 minutes to stuff. So over an hour and a half to stuff these bears, which then had to stitched up, so likely another 30 minutes on top of that. So over two hours. They complained that it took too long. So they called me over to help the girl who was helping them, to get her to finish stuffing the bears faster. I was supposed to be stocking, and had to ask my manager, but they got angry when I didn’t just drop what I was doing to help them. “We are on vacation from Hawaii, and this is our last day. You should be treating us like kings!”
But it gets worse.
While they were trying on their clothes, some of the bears started to rip, as we told them they would. Instead of just grabbing new bears and having it stuffed PROPERLY, they insisted that the girl who stuffed the bears for them restitch each bear. Restitching overstuffed bears is a NIGHTMARE, and we told them that even if we did restitch these bears, it would not prevent them from ripping again. They insisted. Her threads kept breaking, and they kept harassing her every time. They harassed her so much that they made the girl cry. I didn’t see this happening until it was too late and had to go and comfort my coworker who was having a complete panic attack. They complained to our manager that she took too long and that we needed to train her how to sew better. “We are on vacation and this is our last night, you should all be showing us a better time than this.” It is now midnight.
But it gets. Worse.
We ring up all their bears and clothes. They decide, after we have scanned and rung up 20 bears, each with a full outfit, that they wanted to go back and get more outfits. So they ask us to keep the transaction open. They are the only guests here at this point. They get more clothes and accessories and THREE MORE EXTRA STUFFED BEARS. Finally, their transaction is ready to be finished, we ask if they want to do out gift card bonus (every 30$ you spend, you qualify for half off of a $10 gift card. There is a lot of pressure put on us to sell a lot of these and get our percentage up.) They qualified for like 30 of them???? They could have gotten any number of them, and ultimatelt could have gotten $300 of gift cards for $150. The wanted none. That threw off out percentage for that night so hard. They left the store at 2 o’clock in the morning.
But at least they were on vacation, and it was their last night.
But it. Gets. WORSE~
It WASNT their last night. The next day that they came in to use some coupons and we informed them that we couldn’t stack the coupons. So they called my manager over to tell me that I was doing my job poorly and that I should be treating them with “more respect.” (All I had done was inform them of our coupon policy). My manager came over to tell them the exact thing I told them. They yelled at her hard core. Inside, all I wanted was for them to do was leave. They did not. They finished their transaction, complaining to me the whole time. And of course they said to me: “this place is terrible, i hope you know that. This is our last day, you should be treating us with more respect!”
BUT IT GETS. WORSE.
THAT WASNT THEIR LAST NIGHT EITHER. THEY CAME IN. EVERY. DAY. THAT. WEEK.
Thinking about doing an audio “stand-up comedy” version of this.
